Design Consultation

Danielle was planning a new extension and a complete internal renovation of her family home. Although she is a very creative person, she had always adapted herself to the kitchen she had inherited. Now having the choice to make it work just for her, she wanted a helping hand to guide her through the process.

I came out at the very early stages of the project and as we sat at the old kitchen table, we looked out over the garden and began to imagine what this new space was going to look like and how it could work for them.

Spending Wisely

Their architect had suggested using the whole room as a kitchen, but it was unnecessarily big (and therefore expensive) and would have meant the main floorspace would have been towards the back of the room, away from the large doors leading out to the garden. By creating a kitchen/snug with dining space to the rear, there is plenty of space for adults to socialise and children to play. It also meant that Danielle could concentrate her budget on a small but beautiful kitchen, rather than spreading it thinly over a large and inefficient room. This meant that she had money left over to splash out on this gorgeous handmade framed kitchen and added some lovely kitchen gadgets like her boiling hot tap in antique brass.

The Plans

After this kitchen consultation and a few iterations later, I could give Danielle the plans for her to take to her chosen cabinetmaker who could then create her dream kitchen. I came back just after the new room was made watertight and we sketched out on the walls and floor how the new room would work. This way we could visualise the new layout and by acting out common kitchen tasks, we could ensure everything was in easy reach. We realised that there was an old back door that was going to be blocked up and so I created a small drinks nook where she now keeps her tea, coffee and kids drinks for a quick grab.

something similar would cost around £20K

THEY SAID | Aside from my family, our house is the thing I am most proud of. Hours upon hours of research, pinning, reading and bargain hunting. Aside from a lovely local kitchen designer who came out at the beginning to talk about kitchen ergonomics, every detail is from the heart. It was a loooooong process [of building work] but absolutely worth it and I love every single last detail. Not to everyone's taste but it suits our family perfectly.
