A Farmhouse Kitchen

farmhouse kitchen, blue painted kitchen, aga, granite worktops, awkward spaces

The Cottage

Dr and Mrs Rains’s kitchen was in a sorry state of affairs. Their lumpy bumpy cottage was pushing it apart and for some strange reason, their Aga was positioned in front of the chimney breast, blocking up the room. It wasn’t until we had drawn out the room’s dimensions that we realised how much space and potential this room had.

Using the Kitchen Chimney

By removing the asbestos from the chimney, we could install an extractor and push the Aga into the newly tiled chimney breast, freeing up the room for a spacious island. By using a flush-line hob, the worktop can be used in full during the winter but still allows the couple to cook during the summer when the Aga is switched off.

Kitchen Dresser

A narrow dresser was created in line with the pillar by the door. It was finished with oak worktops and glass wall cabinets to display their glassware and ceramics. A matching oak topped base cabinet was made to fit under the window so that Mrs Rains can grow her seedlings in the summer with the warmth of the kitchen.

Storage Solutions

A reduced depth larder cupboard was made to fit behind the door before leading into the dishwasher, bin cabinet and large double Belfast Sink. The chimney breast is flanked either side with a fridge and pull out larder. The island provides plenty of storage for all their pots and pans.

The kitchen is still a work in progress with two tall spice racks to be fixed to the chimney breast with a decorative panel and shelf between.
