How Difficult is it to Move My Kitchen Sink?

You've chosen your new kitchen design, what next?

You may find that the layout of the new design is different to the current layout of your kitchen which may create the need to move your kitchen sink or get rid of your current sink, and install a new kitchen sink elsewhere in the room.

This creates the question, how do I do this?

Where does the sink go?

If asked where the kitchen sink goes, most would say in front of a window. This made sense in the 1950s when women were spending up to five hours a day in the kitchen.

In 2021, we only spend 50 minutes a day in the kitchen, and only 14 of these minutes are cleaning and washing up at the kitchen sink. Which could remove the need for the kitchen sink to be by a window. Why compromise your layout for a good view for 14 minutes?

The Easiest Way To Move The Kitchen Sink

Water pipes are easy to move around with the help of a plumber. The expense comes with the drainage. The easiest and cleanest way to move your kitchen sink is by running the pipes externally along the wall. They can then be hidden in the void built into all cabinets or boxed in if necessary.

How to Hide Sink Pipes

If you are taking it past areas of visible wall or openings, these pipes need to be hidden in the wall or floor. This process can get a bit messier than a normal kitchen sink installation. It may be easier in some cases to relocate your water pipes by bringing new ones down from upstairs. This will involve lifting bedroom floorboards. None of this work is particularly difficult and can be completed in a day or two. Yet it could involve high levels of dirt and disruption from chiselling, plastering and re-decorating.

Putting a Sink in a Kitchen Island

Kitchen sinks in islands are slightly more fiddly but not impossible to install. You will have to replace your flooring though as it involves digging a channel from your existing drain to the middle of your kitchen.

In solid floors, they will dig a small trench and fit a large tube where the plumbing and wires are fed through. This makes maintenance easy in the future as you won't have to dig up your floor again. On suspended floors, they can run the pipe underneath.

If you are building from scratch in an extension or new build, let the builders know early on to keep them on your side. Happy builders make the process so much smoother!

Can I Move The Sink Drainage Point

The most complicated part of moving a sink would be if you needed to move the waste pipe. You will need a route to an existing outside drain. You can also link in with a utility or downstairs toilet system. There are many options, but some can cost more. So keep this in mind!
